چکیده

Abstract Studies done on small tropical west-flowing river catchments located in the Western Ghats southwestern India have suggested very intense chemical weathering rates and associated CO 2 consumption. Very less studies are reported from these notwithstanding their importance as potential sinks of atmospheric at global scale. A total 156 samples were collected a catchment India, Payaswini–Chandragiri Basin, during pre-monsoon, monsoon post-monsoon seasons 2016 2017, respectively. This system comprises two rivers originating an elevation 1350 m peninsular India. The area is dominated by biotite sillimanite gneiss. Sodium dominant cation, contributing ~ 50% cations, whereas HCO 3 − contributes 75% anions. average anion concentration varied range > Cl SO 4 2− NO F , major cation Na + Ca 2+ Mg K . silicate rate (SWR) was 42 t km −2 y −1 year 36 2017. annual carbon dioxide consumption (CCR) due to rock 9.6 × 10 5 mol 8.3 for CCR study higher than other large like Amazon, Congo-Zaire, Orinoco, Parana Indus because its unique topography, hot humid climate rainfall.

Dissolved trace element biogeochemistry of a tropical river, Southwestern India.

River Swarna, a small tropical river originating in Western Ghats (at an altitude of 1,160 m above mean sea level) and flowing in the southwest coast of India discharges an average of 54 m(3)s(-1) of water into the Arabian Sea, of which significant part is being discharged during the monsoon. No studies have been made yet on the water chemistry of the Swarna River basin, even as half a million ...

Carbon Dioxide Emissions from the Tropical Dowleiswaram Reservoir on the Godavari River, Southeast of India

Time-series observations were conducted in the Dowleiswaram dam reservoir that was constructed on the largest monsoonal river in India to understand the source of inorganic carbon, and fluxes to the atmosphere. The reservoir stores water during dry period of six months and water increases during the period when Indian subcontinent receives significant rainfall. Significant modification of organ...

Sensitivity of chemical weathering and dissolved carbon dynamics to hydrological conditions in a typical karst river

To better understand the mechanisms that hydrological conditions control chemical weathering and carbon dynamics in the large rivers, we investigated hydrochemistry and carbon isotopic compositions of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) based on high-frequency sampling in the Wujiang River draining the carbonate area in southwestern China. Concentrations of major dissolved solute do not strictly f...

Microcosm studies of the role of land plants in elevating soil carbon dioxide and chemical weathering

[1] A decrease in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration during the midPalaeozoic is postulated to have been partially the consequence of the evolution of rooted land plants. Root development increased the amount of carbonic acid generated by root respiration within soils. This led to increased chemical weathering of silicates and subsequent formation of carbonates, resulting in lower a...

Weathering profiles, mass-balance analysis, and rates of solute loss: Linkages between weathering and erosion in a small, steep catchment

In a headwater catchment in the Oregon Coast Range, we find that solid-phase mass losses due to chemical weathering are equivalent in the bedrock and the soil. However, the long-term rate of mass loss per unit volume of parent rock is greater in the soil than in the rock. We attribute this finding to the effects of biotic processes in the soil and to hydrologic conditions that maximize contact ...
